Hogmanay Cards

Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of New Year's Eve with deep historical and cultural roots. Its name and customs are of uncertain origin (possible Gaelic, Norse and Old French influences) and the festival became especially important in Scotland after the suppression of Christmas observance in earlier centuries, making New Year the main winter celebration. Typical traditions include torchlight processions and fire ceremonies, 'first-footing' (the first visitor after midnight bringing symbolic gifts like coal, salt or whisky for luck), street parties, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Hogmanay marks communal renewal, hospitality, and wishes for luck and prosperity in the coming year.
